Kratom sales keep growing nationwide, but most banks and mainstream payment processors still won’t work with kratom businesses. The reason usually has little to do with how you run your business, and a lot to do with how processors score the whole category.
Limitless Payment Solutions wants to help; we work with high risk kratom merchants every day, connecting them with payment processors that offer stability and protection from unexpected shutdowns.
If you’re currently operating a kratom business or looking to start one, our quick guide illustrates the complexities of obtaining a payment processor and how to best find one.
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is an evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. Its dried leaves are sold as powder, capsules, tablets, and extracts.
Kratom is not FDA-approved, and it can’t legally be marketed as a dietary supplement or with health claims. That regulatory gray area is the starting point for how processors view every kratom business.
Processors label kratom high-risk for four reasons. None of them is about fraud or refund abuse by kratom merchants.
Kratom’s legality varies from state to state and even country to country. In the United States, while kratom is legal at the federal level, several states and municipalities have imposed bans or restrictions. Internationally, countries like Australia classify kratom as a Schedule 9 substance, rendering it illegal to use, own, or transport. In Israel, kratom is deemed a “dangerous drug” by the Department of Health, leading to a complete ban.
Ten states now ban kratom, and more have passed or proposed new rules in the last two years. A processor that approves you in one state can inherit a compliance problem when you ship to the next. See our state-by-state kratom ship-or-block table.
The FDA treats kratom as an unapproved dietary ingredient and has warned consumers not to use it. The DEA lists kratom as a drug of concern. Banks read those positions as regulatory risk.
Most kratom is sold online, where card-not-present transactions are easier to dispute. Processors price in that risk even when a merchant’s own dispute rate is low.
Some banks have blanket policies against kratom no matter how clean the file is. That’s why a strong kratom merchant can still be declined by a traditional bank.
Getting approved is half the job. Staying approved comes down to five habits.
Expect your processor to hold 5% to 10% of daily sales for about 180 days. Build that hold into your cash-flow plan from day one, and ask your processor when your reserve will be reviewed.
Card networks track disputes as a share of your monthly transactions. Once that ratio passes roughly 1%, you risk a network monitoring program with extra fees, or losing the account. Exact thresholds vary by network and program. Use a clear billing descriptor, get delivery confirmation on every order, answer refund requests fast, and turn on dispute alerts so you can refund before a chargeback is filed.
Verify age at checkout, block banned states and localities, and keep health claims off your site, labels, and social posts. Processors re-check these during account reviews, not just at approval.
The bank approved a specific business model and product mix. Adding CBD, a proprietary kratom blend, or another supplement later can put the account at risk quickly. Review any new product with your processor before it goes on your site.
The best protection against a sudden shutdown is not putting all of your processing in one place. Once you’re approved and have a few months of clean processing history, we’ll often take your business to a second bank and get another account approved. A processor can decide it no longer wants kratom for reasons that have nothing to do with how you performed. With a backup already in place, you’re not starting from zero and scrambling for a replacement.

Many kratom merchants start with Square, PayPal, or Stripe because it’s easy to get up and processing. But easy approval doesn’t mean the business was fully reviewed for kratom. A merchant may process for a while without an issue, then a chargeback or account review prompts a closer look at what’s being sold, and the account is closed. If you’ve already processed cleanly for a few months, that history can help: three months of statements showing stable volume and low chargebacks can make your file stronger than a true startup’s. We never recommend hiding what you sell.
Being on the MATCH list makes things harder, but it isn’t automatically a dead end. The reason you were listed matters. Serious causes, like excessive chargebacks, fraud, or card network violations, may put the file out of reach. But we’ve also seen kratom merchants terminated by processors that never understood or wanted the business. In those cases, we look at the reason for the listing, the account history, and your current business before deciding whether there’s a path forward.
Often, yes, but first we need to know why. Some processors send one application to multiple banks at once, hoping somebody says yes. That stacks one decline on top of another, and after eight declines, the next underwriter has to explain why they’d approve a merchant several banks already turned down. We take the time to understand each decline before deciding where your file goes next. A serial rejection doesn’t automatically make a merchant unplaceable.
The most common reasons are products the bank won’t accept, missing documents, health claims on your website, no age verification or state blocking at checkout, or a bank with a blanket kratom policy. Our Kratom Underwriting Readiness Check shows what underwriters look for.
Often, yes. After a sustained period of clean processing and low chargebacks, you can ask your processor for a reserve review.
